Shupi Mukerji: From Carpentry Apprenticeship to Construction Business Ownership - Fieldview Data Center

Shupi Mukerji, also known as Ayonava Mukerji, began his career in Australia’s construction industry as a carpentry apprentice. He went on to establish a construction business and become a part-owner of a formwork enterprise. Over more than two decades, he has held senior positions in construction organisations and undertaken strategic leadership at Omega Structures. His responsibilities have included workforce management, client relationships and large-scale project delivery, along with participation in industry safety guidance.

Shupi Mukerji: From Carpentry and Business Ownership to Senior Roles

Shupi Mukerji’s carpentry training included a Certificate III in Carpentry completed through the CFMEU apprenticeship scheme. The apprenticeship gave him practical experience of construction work before he entered business ownership. That trade background also established his emphasis on workmanship, discipline and accountability on site, principles he continues to apply in construction leadership.

After his apprenticeship, he established a construction business, becoming one of only two participants from the programme to do so. He also held part-ownership of a formwork enterprise. Shupi Mukerji’s business experience involved commercial responsibilities and the organisation of construction work on site. These roles came before his later work managing construction teams and client relationships in established organisations.

The business in which he held an ownership interest specialised in formwork, which involves temporary structures used to shape and support concrete during construction. These structures must withstand the loads associated with concrete placement before being altered or removed as work progresses. His experience in this area formed part of the practical background he later brought to senior construction leadership roles.

Shupi Mukerji held senior leadership roles with Hutchinson Builders, Wideform and Caelli Formwork. His responsibilities in those organisations encompassed workforce coordination, client relationships and construction project delivery.

Workforce leadership involved setting expectations for the people delivering construction work. Client management required maintaining relationships and responding to commercial considerations. He gained experience balancing commercial objectives with conditions affecting the work carried out on construction sites.

Large-scale project delivery also formed part of Shupi Mukerji’s experience in construction leadership. He later undertook strategic leadership at Omega Structures, where his work includes collaboration with construction teams.

Shupi Mukerji’s Leadership Approach at Omega Structures

At Omega Structures, Shupi Mukerji emphasises preparation, consistent standards, adaptability and attention to detail. He focuses on maintaining systems and clear expectations across construction teams.

He identifies The Art of War as an influence on his leadership philosophy, particularly its themes of discipline, preparation and consistency. He examines his own performance and looks for opportunities to improve, both professionally and personally. He extends that scrutiny to the performance of teams, including how they meet the expectations established for their work. He also pays attention to the systems used by teams and the consistency of the work they deliver.

This emphasis on improvement accompanies his attention to the smaller details of construction work. He regards consistency in those details as important to maintaining standards across teams with different responsibilities. His approach combines clear expectations with a willingness to reconsider working methods when changes are needed.

Alongside performance standards, Shupi Mukerji emphasises professional respect. He treats site staff, business owners and industry leaders with the same level of professionalism, regardless of their position. He also recognises and rewards hard work among people involved in construction projects.

His leadership priorities also include workforce development, construction safety and accountability on site. He sets expectations for safe work practices and for the way people carry out their responsibilities on construction sites. His focus on safety also covers the practical risks that arise when temporary structures are used during construction.

Formwork Standards and Industry Involvement

Shupi Mukerji was involved in the consultation and drafting of Queensland’s Formwork Code of Practice 2016. The code commenced on 31 March 2016 and provides guidance on managing the health and safety risks arising from formwork activities. It covers the design, erection, alteration and dismantling of temporary formwork structures, extending across the stages of work involved in concrete construction.

The code addresses hazards such as the collapse of temporary supports and falls from heights during construction. It covers the risks encountered as formwork is erected, used, altered and dismantled, including the stages when supports are carrying the loads placed on them.

Work sequencing and coordination between trades are also addressed. Several construction activities may take place around the same temporary formwork system, so the order in which tasks are carried out needs to be considered. The guidance covers coordination between the people working with the formwork and those carrying out other activities on site.

The code also discusses specialist formwork systems, including jump forms and slip forms, and the training requirements associated with their use. These provisions form part of the wider safety guidance to which Mukerji contributed through the consultation and drafting process. His involvement reflects the connection between his practical construction background and his participation in industry safety standards.
